How to Log In to ECOMP and File Your Claim
ECOMP is the Department of Labor's free online portal for federal workers' comp claims. Go to ecomp.dol.gov, register an account with your email address, then sign in to file forms like the CA-1, CA-2 or CA-7. To view your FECA case file, you must also verify your identity in ECOMP after registering.

If you work for the federal government and get hurt on the job, most of your claim will run through one website: ECOMP. Getting in the first time can feel confusing, especially when you’re hurting. This guide walks through it step by step, in plain English.
What ECOMP is
ECOMP stands for the Employees’ Compensation Operations and Management Portal. It’s run by the U.S. Department of Labor, and it’s where federal workers file and track claims under the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act (FECA).
A few things DOL makes clear on its How to File a Claim page:
- ECOMP is “a free web-based application.”
- To file a new injury or illness claim, you first register for an ECOMP account.
- You do not need approval from your supervisor or anyone else at your agency to register.
Step 1: Register your account
- Go to www.ecomp.dol.gov.
- Choose to register, and sign up using your email address (ECOMP help).
- Use a personal email you check often. Claim status updates come by email.
For extra help while registering, DOL suggests hovering over the “HELP” icon on the ECOMP site. DOL also offers a video tutorial on registering (DOL FECA FAQ).
Step 2: Verify your identity
Registering lets you file forms. But to see information about your FECA claims, DOL says “you must verify your identity in ECOMP after you register for an account” (DOL FECA FAQ). Follow the prompts on screen. Once verified, you can view, print and save your complete case file.
Step 3: Sign in and file your claim
After you register, click “Sign In” on the ECOMP home page. From your Employee Dashboard, you can start a form (ECOMP help).
For a new injury or illness (CA-1 or CA-2):
- Pick the right form. A CA-1 is for a traumatic injury from one event or one work shift. A CA-2 is for an occupational disease that built up over time. Our post on the difference between a CA-1 and a CA-2 explains how to choose.
- Fill out every field. You can save a draft and come back, but a draft “will not be processed” until you submit it.
- You may upload supporting documents.
- When you submit, you’ll enter your supervisor’s email address. Your supervisor reviews it, then a reviewing official at your agency, and then it goes to OWCP.
- If your supervisor has a question, the form may come back to you marked “Returned to Filer.”
- Use “Track Status” or your dashboard to follow it.
Don’t wait. For a traumatic injury, you must turn in your CA-1 to your agency no later than 30 days after the injury to stay eligible for continuation of pay (20 CFR 10.210(a)).
For lost wages (CA-7):
Once you have an OWCP case number, you can file the CA-7 and CA-7a online through ECOMP. The CA-7b can’t be filed electronically; your agency submits it (ECOMP help). The CA-7 should be filed no more than 14 calendar days after your pay stops (20 CFR 10.102(a)(2)). Learn more in what a CA-7 form is.
Step 4: Upload documents to your case
ECOMP has a Document Upload feature on its home page. It works for any existing case, even one that wasn’t started in ECOMP. You’ll need your last name, case number, date of birth and date of injury. DOL says uploads “should usually be available to OWCP within 4 hours” (ECOMP help).
DOL’s FAQ says you can use ECOMP to upload:
- Medical reports and other evidence
- A change of address
- A request to change physicians
- A letter naming an authorized representative
- Direct deposit forms
- General letters to your claims examiner
Step 5: Check your claim status
If you filed through ECOMP, your claim number shows on your employee dashboard. DOL also says the Claimant Query System, now part of ECOMP, gives injured workers 24-hour access to claim information, including the status of a CA-7 (DOL FECA FAQ).
Tips if you get stuck
- Use the same email every time. Signing up with one address and trying to sign in with another is an easy mistake to make.
- Save drafts often. Long forms can time out.
- Keep copies. Download or print what you submit.
- Never share your password, even with someone helping you with forms. Sit with them and sign in yourself.
You can see all the main federal forms on our OWCP forms page.

Quick answers
Do I need my supervisor's permission to open an ECOMP account?
No. The Department of Labor says you do not need approval from your supervisor or anyone else at your agency to register for ECOMP. Your supervisor only comes in later, when a CA-1 or CA-2 you submit is routed to them for review.
Where do I find my OWCP claim number?
If you filed your claim electronically through ECOMP, DOL says your claim number appears on your employee dashboard page. You will need that number to file a CA-7 online or to use the Document Upload feature for your case.
Can I see my whole OWCP case file online?
Yes, once you verify your identity in ECOMP. The Department of Labor says verified users can view, print and save their complete case file there. This is a good way to confirm your doctor's reports actually reached OWCP.
